From RSF Director Diahann:

Billie Holiday is one of the most influential jazz vocalists of all time. I love her unique vocal style, combining a lightness of touch with a quality of melancholy and vulnerability which in part reflects her extremely troubled upbringing and personal life. “Strange Fruit” (1939) is one of her most famous songs. It was controversial because it was about lynching African-American males in the South and led to a concerted campaign to silence her.
